J.M.Leclair - Le Tombeau

Alpha Productions' Jean-Marie Leclair: Le Tombeau features the chamber group Les Folies Françoises under the direction of violinist Patrick Cohën-Akenine in a chamber overture from Op. 13, three sonatas from Op. 5, and the Concerto in G minor, Op. 10/6, by the ill-fated Leclair. In the concerto, Les Folies Françoises is filled out into a small orchestra whimsically referred to as the Orchestre des Folies Françoises, an appellation that can be translated as "the orchestra of French madmen," although that is probably not what they had in mind. It is the concerto that comes off best here, although all of the playing on Jean-Marie Leclair: Le Tombeau is at least decent and very French in character.

It just doesn't feel definitive in the way certain other Alpha Productions issues of Baroque music, such as Bruno Cocset's recording of Vivaldi's cello sonatas or Stylus Phantasticus' Philipp Heinrich Erlebach collection, easily achieve -- Jean-Marie Leclair: Le Tombeau isn't quite up to that standard. Patrick Cohën-Akenine is tangled up in his strings during the difficult double-stops that open the title track, Sonata VI in C minor, Op. 5/6 "Le Tombeau," and one is left to wonder why Cohën-Akenine decided not to retake this passage. However, none of these pieces has been recorded with any great depth, so Jean-Marie Leclair: Le Tombeau is still a welcome addition to Leclair's catalog, and a decent place to start if one wants to investigate the music of Leclair.

A contemporary of J.S. Bach, Christoph Graupner (Kirchberg, Saxony, January 1683-Darmstadt, Hesse, May 1760) was a composer highly thought of in his day, much like Handel or Telemann, with whom he maintained a lifetime friendship. After studying with Kuhnau, J.S. Bach 's predecessor as Cantor of St. Thomas's in Leipzig, Graupner left the city in 1705 to assume the function of harpsichordist at the Hamburg Opera Orchestra, under Reinhard Keiser.

Anna Bon (b. 1739/40) was born in Russia and was an Italian composer and singer. Her parents were both involved in music, and travelled internationally; her father, Girolamo Bon, as a librettist and scenographer, her mother, Rosa Ruvinetti Bon, as a singer. She entered Ospedale della Pietà as a student at the age of four. She had rejoined her parents by the time they were at Bayreuth in the service of Margrave Friedrich of Brandenburg Kulmbach. In 1762 the family moved to the Esterházy court at Eisenach, where Anna remained until at least 1765. By 1767 she lived in Hildburghausen and was married to the singer Mongeri. (Wikipedia)

Simone Kermes - Bel Canto

12 tracks - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 124Mb

Nornar - FileFactory - Uploaded

Listeners needn’t worry, the publicity assures us: Baroque specialist Simone Kermes might be singing bel canto but she hasn’t changed voice type. Nor would she need to. There’s no reason why Kermes’ high flying soprano shouldn’t negotiate the trills and roulades of Bellini and Rossini just as skilfully as those of Handel. In terms of clarity and accuracy, she’s in excellent form here, and those who’ve seen her wacky live performances on YouTube will be either relieved or disappointed (according to taste) to discover her in more straight-laced mode.

Curiously she sings these arias utterly without vibrato. This might be effective in short doses but applied across the board, it drains much of the life from this spirited music. Make no mistake, Kermes makes a beautiful sound; it just doesn’t ring true to the repertoire, and while she succeeds to an extent in illustrating the stylistic links between Baroque and bel canto, singing Rossini’s Giusto ciel like a piece of lost Pergolesi doesn’t really prove anything. Still, there’s some spectacular vocal showmanship here, including an electrifying Mercadante rarity and two icily precise Queen of the Night arias, and when Monteverdi finally arrives, so does an audible sense of homecoming.

Concerto Köln and Christoph-Mathias Mueller are as sprightly as Kermes herself. For adventurous programming she can’t be faulted, but she’s made more successful discs than this. Limelight Magazine

All lovers of the violin and its colorful history should be grateful to the Guglielmos, Lazari, and Dynamic for this series, so energetically played and featuring such clear and, at the same time, reverberant recorded sound—and such informative notes. This monument should stand for all time and be a part of every aficionado’s library. Urgently recommended as a whole and in its parts, including this one. A standing ovation for the impossible dream so stunningly made real.  (The review is here:)

Vivaldi - Concerti Per Archi II

The concertos for strings are a very special genre in Vivaldi's output. Contrary to the concertos for solo instruments, those offer a real balance and amazing range of colours between all the intruments concerned. Following a very successful first volume, released in 2004, Rinaldo Alessandrini and Concerto Italiano offer a new milestone recording in Vivaldi's instrumental music, full of colours and refinement.

'Alessandrini is a remarkable musician… [he] achieves impeccable instrumental balance and unity from his group of six players together with a satisfying range of colouration.' '…these performances are of a consistently high-calibre and continue to provide joyful and positive listening experiences.'    Music Web International
